Frontline Commando is another in Glu Mobile’s long-line of supremely-coded but ultimately slightly frustrating titles. Glu, you see, is one of those software companies that use the dreaded ‘in-app purchase’ to devastating effect.

However, provided you’re not averse to a bit of good, old-fashioned hard work, Frontline Commando doesn’t necessarily require a remortgage to progress.

The basic premise of the game involves killing bad guys. Or killing bad guys whilst not getting killed yourself to be precise. During each wave of bad guys you’re able to take cover behind a variety of, sadly destructable, cover points. While you’re reloading or swapping weapons, ducking down behind cover affords you some protection from enemy fire, although don’t imagine you can just sit out wave upon wave behind a wall. The bad guys will get you.

You view the action in the third person from just behind your character, meaning you get a great view of the action as it unfolds and can easily see who has a line of sight shot at your guy and do something about it. With enemies ranging from standard grunts with machine guns to snipers to RPG-equipped lunatics, there’s plenty of scope to get smoked, although if you’re prepared to put some time in, you can tip the odds more firmly in your favour by adding a massive arsenal of weapons to your loadout. Perhaps sir requires some body armour, too?

All in all, FC is an impressive game and graphically turns heads the second you load it up on the bus or train, with iPhone owners craning their necks to get a better view. For that reason alone it’s hard not to recommend it, but if you like your games action-packed and brain-out, then FC will definitely be your bag. Of you like something that’s a little more cerebrally-taxing, you’ll probably find your mind starts to wander after half an hour or so’s play.

Either way, this is a well-coded, beautifully presented game that deserves a look.
